South Africa is enjoying a substantial increase in the number of EVs available for sale from a wide range of manufacturers. The majority of EVs currently available in SA are aimed at the premium customer segment however an increasing number of EVs in the budget segment are planned for launch in 2025 and beyond as the market picks up momentum. EVs in SA are available for purchase from a wide range of manufacturers including Audi, BMW, MINI, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, GWM and for the well-heeled customers Rolls Royce and Porsche. Further, VW, Toyota, and BYD are planning to launch EV products in the near term and these vehicles are poised to completely shake up the local industry. The title of the most budget friendly EV in South Africa currently goes to the BYD Dolphin priced at R539,900 and prices are expected to steadily decrease as more products are launched into the market. The recently announced EV whitepaper by the Department of Trade and Industry provides much needed policy direction and certainty to the local EV manufacturers and is poised to stimulate sales in the local market. Several major car manufacturers have announced plans to update their local manufacturing plants to accommodate EV production for sale into SA and export markets. This development is a game charger for the local EV industry, and we are excited to play our part to enable EV travel for all South Africans.
